Random thoughts of Pregnancy

I'm 39 weeks pregnant!

Proud and patient Papa and Mama

Anxious big brother--he has no idea what he's in for!

Another week has passed in the Smith family while waiting for our little one. We are excited but content, enjoying our couple-hood while trying to wrap our minds around the concept that our lives are about to change--dramatically--forever.

The highlight of the week was a long anticipated Josh Ritter concert that we attended in Anchorage Saturday night, January 31. I was under strict orders to NOT go into labor before this concert. : ) The gentle folk crooning and acoustic guitar playing didn't put me into labor either (although I am certain that the baby enjoyed the music--I got lots of rhythmic thumps and bumps from the inside). Now it's February, and I can have my amethyst baby at any time.

It's hard not knowing exactly when the baby will come. Although I know it's perfectly natural and millions of women before me have waited in nervous anticipation for the exact same thing.

For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. I Thessalonians 5: 2-3

Ack! That's a scary description. Who's not escaping? Those in sudden destruction or those in labor or both? But, there is also this wonderful description from Jesus' own mouth:

A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. John 16:21

It can almost make me cry when thinking about it. And then this gorgeous gem from David's heart. How I want to bring my little ones up this way!

But You are He who took Me out of the womb;

You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts.

I was cast upon You from birth.

From My mother’s womb You have been My God.

Psalms 22:9-10

I do want to remember that this precious child entrusted to my care is not and was never "mine" but belongs to the Lord. It is my job to teach that tender little heart about their heavenly Father so they will choose to remain eternally His. Oh, but I can't wait to kiss that sweet little downy head and each little tiny toe and finger. I look forward to holding that tender body close to mine and being "Mama" to new little person . . .

As you can probably tell, this is a very exciting, emotional, and hormonal time! I am so thankful to have the assurance of God's care and love for all of us. Please continue to keep us in your prayers.

  1. You're really on the home stretch now! You're gunna be great. I hope you're able to make it to your concert.

Just remember that when the contractions get really intense, your pain pretty much goes away between them. And, you shouldn't have any pain once your baby is born. Isn't that nice?

    I'll be praying for ya!

  2. i am a horrible person who has not returned your emails. . .remember me?!! when pregnant with alani, several friends were due right around the same time as i, i got kind of tired of hearing of everyone else having thier babies and my little one wanted to stay tucked inside. . . but then. . . then two days before she was born, i cried and cried in mike's arms because i was afraid i'd miss being one person with her. . . once she came, i didn't even notice, there was too much to be in wonder about, and just to be amazed by this new little person that never existed before was here, in my arms, for me to hold and treasure and "borrow" for a lifetime. it's such a wonderful time!! so. . all that to say, 1 down, 2 to do. . will you or kara be the next to hold a new baby? i'm sure you're SOOO excited!!!

Can't say I have any experience to offer. Or any wisdom on the matter of birthing babies. I guess the only bit of experience I've had was largely lost on the fact that I, for one, was screaming, and
2nd, was completely naked. But I really can't remember it all that well. I guess the only encouragement I can give is that I made it through the process fine and I turned out...well, okay maybe not normal. But not bad. My mother did fine as I am sure that you will do fine.
I hope you guys are doing great.

  5. I agree with Kacie about the contractions. When they're long and strong, just remember that they will end soon. Now the pushing . . . that's another story altogether! But you'll be fine. After all, God designed us for this! We're praying for an easy labor. And we're so excited for you guys. Just be sure to put something on your blog for all the people away from Wasilla - even if it's just a picture of the sweet little baby. Love you!

Hey guys! I can't believe it's almost time! We are both so excited for you and can't wait to see your little one.

Make sure to let us know as soon as possible when the time has come (through Facebook, maybe?). We want to be excited with you, and be praying for you.

I sure do miss you guys. Tell your families hello for me.
